How BallastWISE Works

BallastWISE analyses ballast water samples using patented technology that combines motion detection and fluorescence measurement to identify and characterise organisms present in the sample.

During analysis, the system automatically determines:

  • The number of moving organisms, indicating biological activity

  • The number of organisms exhibiting active fluorescence

  • The size of each detected organism

By capturing and analysing these signals, BallastWISE detects and counts organisms within the sample and classifies them based on their biological activity and size.

The system automates the process of manual microscopy, the gold-standard method used by accredited laboratories for biological testing. BallastWISE performs this analysis automatically, providing consistent results without the need for specialist laboratory training.
